Dermal Delivery Power of Spicules: Scientifically Proven Deep Skin Penetration to Dermis and Rejuvenation Benefits

In the skincare industry, innovative approaches continually emerge, combining advanced science and natural ingredients. Spicules demonstrate up to 66-fold greater penetration into the dermis compared to conventional methods, effectively delivering active ingredients deeply into the skin.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, scientifically known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), is a minimally invasive procedure involving the repeated puncturing of the skin with tiny, sterile needles. These controlled micro-injuries activate the skin's natural healing mechanisms, increasing collagen and elastin production. This procedure effectively addresses common skin issues such as improving texture, reducing wrinkles, and diminishing acne scars and enlarged pores.

Understanding Spicules

Spicules are natural, microscopic, needle-like structures derived from marine sponges, particularly species like Haliclona. Primarily composed of silica (silicon dioxide), spicules exhibit excellent biocompatibility, gently yet effectively penetrating the outer skin layers. Their natural and biodegradable structure makes them less irritating compared to traditional synthetic needles, making them suitable even for sensitive skin.

Scientifically Proven Deep Skin Penetration to Dermis

Recent research has demonstrated the exceptional skin penetration ability of spicules. In controlled studies, the topical application of SHS significantly enhanced dermal penetration of hydrophilic biomacromolecules. Notably, spicule treatment increased penetration into and across the dermis layer by up to 66-fold compared to conventional methods.

Specifically, the penetration of biomacromolecules (e.g., FD-10) was dramatically improved, achieving a deep dermal delivery that was up to 66 times higher than conventional topical methods. This scientific validation highlights the remarkable potential of spicules to deliver skincare actives directly and effectively to the dermis, where collagen and elastin synthesis occurs.

Why Spicule Microneedling Improves Skin Rejuvenation

The effectiveness of spicule microneedling arises from their mechanical stimulation combined with their biodegradable and biocompatible properties. These spicules gently penetrate the skin and remain embedded for an extended period (up to 72 hours), providing a sustained release of active ingredients.

Compared to conventional microneedling techniques, spicule-based treatments offer minimal irritation and faster recovery, making them an attractive, effective, and gentle skincare solution.
